Romy Loaëc works in fashion as a stylist and consultant. She surfs, cycles, runs, practices yoga, pilates, and Fit Ballet, with a sense of determination and regularity. Passions and skills that are apparent from an early age, as she started ballet when she was just 4 years old.

Inside/Out: The first sport you ever practiced?
Romy Loaëc: Classical dance, at age 4. I did it for 10 years at the Salle Pleyel. It taught me many things: posture, discipline, rigor, and it gave me a taste for effort. Through dancing, I found myself. 

I/O: An athlete who you look up to, or who influenced you?
R: Sylvie Guillem, the classical dancer. She was a reference point in classical dancing. Or maybe Simone Biles, because she’s young, fresh and dynamic. I see her as the new Nadia Comaneci. 

I/O: Does getting out of your comfort zone while training help you face the challenges in your daily life?
R:
Yes, undoubtedly. I need at least 1 yoga class a week, and some cardio, it evens me out. I’ve recently discovered Jivamukti yoga, and I really like the connection between the spiritual and the physical. I love Studio Caelo, where Ben Spiers teaches with music - he sings and plays guitar during meditation, at the end of the class. I feel like it centers me, more than just physically.

I/O: A mantra or motto?
R: 
Oooooohhhmmmm.

I/O: How would you describe the Parisienne's connection to sport and wellness?
R: It’s still more of a trend than a real need, but I think overall, women exercise more and are more careful with their eating habits. So I would say there is a trend towards better-being, that will eventually be part of a lifestyle, kind of like the “cosmopolitan american woman” archetype. 

I/O: Has Paris’ relation to sports changed in the last few years?
R:
Yes, it’s obvious just by looking at the number of yoga studios that have opened in recently.

I/O: How about their relation to sportswear?
R:
The typical parisian woman can now go out wearing a sports bra and leggings. She’ll spend more money on activewear, pick it out more carefully - while keeping style in mind - but the choice of textile quality and form is still secondary. It stays recreational. 

I/O: How does the French Touch apply to sports?
R:
Haha, what kind of a question is that? Exercising with a certain je ne sais quoi and going to Café Kitsuné for a matcha latte afterwards?

I/O: What’s your piece of workout apparel?
R: A sports bra and a high-waisted legging.

I/O: What are you favorite sportswear or athleisure brands?
R: BandierAdidas x Stella McCartneyOlympiaGirlfriend Collective. And Free People, I like their natural beauty line, it’s really refreshing for such a mainstream brand! 

I/O: Do you have a favorite well-being tip or a product you can’t go without?
R:
I have so many, I wouldn’t know where to start… I would say Hair Story. (I have been co-washing for a year - it consists of replacing shampoo with after-shampoo, and the effects are radical.. Organic products: the more natural, the better! Dr. Alkaitis’ Coconut Oil for my body, and oil-pulling in the morning (keeping coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes to eliminate toxins). As far as objects go, I would say my S’Well bottle and my absorbant Yogabum towel.

I/O: All black or rainbow bright?
R: Mostly grey or black, except for a few brands like Adidas x Stella McCartney, which has wonderful colors, and WE AR, a brand I found in Bali. I draw the line at fluorescent colors! 

I/O: Your rituals, before and after training?
R:
My morning ritual sets the mood for my day. When I wake up, I drink hot lemon water, then bring my kids to school. As soon as I get home, I take my yoga mat out, and do sun salutations and stretches for at least 10 minutes - whatever my body needs! I’ve been doing that for about 6 years, and it’s essential for me, no matter where I am. After warming up, I prepare a matcha latte with oat milk and some granola. At the end of the day, after a lesson, I do my own fascia massage with rolls. It hurts so good!

I/O: A fitness or well-being destination on your bucket list?
R:
I would like to go back to Bali for yoga, Byron Bay in Australia for surfing, and Los Angeles for pilates.

I/O: Does music have a central role in your choice of activity?
R:
Absolutely. I need music for every activity. John’s playlists, at Dynamo, can really put me in a trance! I also listen to music for motivation, or when I run. And Ben and Klara’s selection at Caelo Yoga are magical! 

I/O: Do you believe in a new form of feminism? Do you think girls support each other more today than in the past, in sports and performance?
R: We exercise together, sure. But there’s still a strong individualistic tendency. We challenge each other, but it’s to better ourselves, and so it remains something deeply personal. It’s a source of motivation to do things in a group, but the competition lays more within one’s self than with each other. As far as I’m concerned, I need no external motivation to go and train.

1 coach: I can’t pick just one, I have too many! But my dream is to lear from Tracy Anderson. Also, I’m looking for a great pilates teacher!
