SUMMER LIFESTYLE GUIDE: CAP FERRET

You don't need spa or shopping addresses for dreamy, laid-back holidays on the Cap Ferret peninsula. Rather, good taste rimes with chaste, so gather together your espadrilles, cool shades, well-worn cut-offs, your most flattering (and chic) one piece...and - most importantly - those friends with a boat.

CAP-FERRET PADDLING CLUB

Head to Toe

Want to develop a strong core while also discovering the villages on the bay from a calm sea, the perfect meeting point is Boulevard de la Plage. Just two minutes away from the pier, the paddling club is open from June to September, everyday at high tide. The sport provides a great workout taking place between the ships and the oyster beds, across from the Pyla sand dune... Don't miss a post-paddle treat in the form of a classic cannelé on the Lighthouse Beach.

CAP-FERRET SURF CLUB

Surfer Girl

Well, locals would say that summer months are not the best ones for surfing. But if you want to test your first waves or just get back in shape, these soft breaks provide a great opportunity. The classes last 2 hours and alternate theory on the sand, practice in the water, appreciation for the elements and surroundings, plus, of course security and priority rules.

PYLA-PARAGLIDING

Hang Over

We can't imagine a better viewpoint to admire the highest dune in Europe, the Banc d'Arguin, the pines and the bay than via paragliding. Make an appointment at La Teste-Du-Buch to fly over the Pyla dune through one of 2 options: a soft contemplative flight for the most sensible ones, et a more sporty one, with higher speeds, for thrill seekers. And they guarantee that you won't feel vertigo from up there.

THE MOGADOR VILLA

There's No Place Like (Almost) Home

Located on the dunes of the Piquey village, walking distance to the ocean via Avenue du Truc Vert and 2 minutes away from the bay and village boutiques, the Mogador villa offers the comfort and amenities of a summer house in a 5 room guest house with warm yet modern design. Both suites - the Mimbeau and the Dunes - have a view of the swimming pool and are open all year long, except during July and August. Spa services and bike rentals available as well. We never want to leave.

chez-hortense

CHEZ HORTENSE

Since 1938

An institution to return to time and time again, Chez Hortense serves sole, mussels, oysters that even your Cordon-Bleu caliber granny would not decline. Wooden tables and blue Vichy table mats keep things simple; it's the view of the Pyla dune and the cuisine served by Bernadette, the famous owner, that set the standards high. Chez Hortense won't be the most romantic address of your summer, nor the most confidential one, but it's nevertheless a delight.

Reservations recommended.

PASCAL'S WHITE DUNES

Summer Sweets

We all have our own Proust madeleine souvenir, that treat that tastes like summer...Here, the biggest craze are cream filled puffed pastries, in particular the "dune blanche" (white dune). Everyday, throngs of vacationers wait in line in front of Pascal's bakery to buy them by the dozen. Chez Pascal is located in Piquey, in the village of Canon, and also available at the Cap Ferret farmer's market. But be warned: go at your own risk, the fall from the wellness wagon is likely and the addiction level is high. Shout out as well to Piquey Dunes - the same choux filled with raspberry, toffee, almond croquant or chocolate.

balade-sur-un-chaland

BOAT TRIP ON A CHALAND

The Dock of the Bay

A great way to discover Bird Island, the cabins on stilts ("cabanes tchanquées) and watch the water from the bay flowing into the ocean. Renting a chaland, classic wooden oyster-farming boats, allows a leisurely trip along the water to discover villages and peep at the the dreamy architects' houses on the dunes. The best option is to rent the boat at sunset, depending on the tide schedule, and enjoy a gigantic seafood platter on the deck, relaxed in your chaise longue with a glass of rosé. Always one of our favorite holiday moments.

les-pieds-dans-l-eau

LES PIEDS DANS L’EAU

Stuck in the 60s

This small cabin, still relatively removed from tourist circuit, is the perfect place for that first summer break dinner. Le Four is one of the most confidential fishing villages of the peninsula, and the calm, smiling owner Hubert and the fresh, local specialties will make this a night to remember. Dress code: straight from the beach!
