Cha Cha Matcha Nolita

Matcha, Matcha, Matcha

This Instagrammable Nolita nook serves both traditional matcha and signature drinks like ginger matcha golden mylk (to die for) as well as sweets like matcha soft serve ice cream. While it seems like everywhere is on the matcha-wagon, Cha Cha gets bonus points for a fun décor that includes pink wallpaper and palm tree printed banquettes.

Matcha Bar in Chelsea and Williamsburg - and Silverlake, LA - is also a favorite for this antioxidant, anti-inflammatory beverage. Scandi coffeeshop FIKA serves up a particularly strong brew as well. You’ll find us there for a fix after class at FLEX.

Join the Family

A favorite among creative freelancers, Maman café and bakery serves family-inspired French fare in several outposts including Tribeca, Soho, Greenpoint.  

One of the founders if from the Michelin star restaurant La Chassagnette in Camargue region in France, bringing a strong sensibility to ingredients, seasons and a touch of the South of France to the (communal) table.

Good Food and More for Your Brain

Honeybrains is a concept café, located on Lafayette in the heart of the Bond and Bleeker wellness hub.

With the aim to provide "a comprehensive brain wellness experience," the founders, three siblings, propose a superfoods laden menu broken down into 5 primary groups including salads, bowls, plates and sandwiches; healthful beverages like the "Athlete's Milk & Honey" and "Sage Thinking"; a honey bar with wild honey from homebound bees; and interior design meant to stimulate the brain through the open kitchen, acoustical ceiling installation, and circadian lighting system.

Honeybrains also carries products that are said to encourage brain function, like the Muse meditation headband. Coffee lovers with a sweet tooth, be sure to try the La Colombe almond milk and honey latte.

Food for Happy Thought

Sun in Bloom was created by former Bikram instructor Aimee Folette in order to provide clean food that is organic, gluten-free, plant-based and raw but no limitation on flavor and quality. From shitake BLTs to Mamacita Tacos and the baked goods, everything is tasty and served with a smile from TriBeCa and Park Slope. Thanks to Taryn Toomey's team who tipped us off to this one post The Class. 

 

Beet-Cured Salmon Bowl at Two Hands

These 2 Aussie establishments - one in Nolita, the other in Tribeca - are great meeting points for simple, fresh flavors served in an unpretentious environment.

Two Hands menu staples include cauliflower couscous, pickled chili scrambled eggs and some of the best bowls in town (try the beet-cured salmon one). The dinner menu at the restaurant offers a vegetable-centric sharing menu and the bar has organic, biodynamic wines plus juice-based cocktails. 

The only drawback: the NY noise level in which the Shazamable soundtrack can upstage conversational agility.

BAKERI

Fully Baked

Another tasty spot for the gluten-tolerant is Brooklyn born Bakeri. Currently located in Greenpoint, Williamsburg and most recently the East Village, Bakeri bakes their own bread a pasteries, churns their own butter and also blitzes together one killer green smoothie with cashew butter and a spicy ginger kick. The salvaged and upcyled interiors complement the homey culinary charm.

We discovered this adorable spot on Havemeyer Street in Brooklyn thanks to one of our upcoming community members who lives in the neighborhood and goes to Little Choc to write and savor their housemade almond milk lattes (made with Toby's Estate coffee). 

Although said member has since kicked her caffeine habit, there are plenty of other enticing reasons to return: gluten-free and vegan crêpes; raw truffles with a hefty dose of vitamin B12 (33,000% RDI to be exact); smoothies, juices, açai bowls; and savory dishes like cashew cheese pizza and burritos with coconut bacon. 

The apothecary reference applies to the tea selection - Choc stocks over 100 herb varieties and encourages customers to personalize their blends, based on health and taste preferences. All herb and tea blends are available for take-out, too.

A favorite of almost everyone we have talked to within the Inside/Out New York community and experts (as well as Gwyneth Paltrow and a bevy of Victoria's Secret models), Sakara Life is an organic, plant-based and gluten-free meal delivery program. Founded by Whitney Tingle and Danielle DuBoise, Sakara aims to get people enthused about making the right choices for their bodies based on desire not just on a sense of obligation or need. 

Other favorites for quick bites include Mulberry & Vine (try the miso-peanut cauliflower) and The Big Quiet endorsed fast-casual fav, Sweet Green.

Who's That Girl

Kudos to The Butcher's Daughter founder, and healthy food and juice entrepreneur, Heather Tierney, for creating cheerful interiors and for truly tapping into the daily culinary desires of downtown creatives (and in Venice, too).

In addition to the requisite kale and avo toast, the menus includes coconut yoghurt parfait, tacos verde, Monterey eggs and matcha pancakes for breakfast and brunch; spaghetti squash carbonara and nut cheese quesadillas for dinner; and soup, salads and toasts throughout the afternoon.

Go at off-hours or be prepared to wait. The space is small and demand off the charts. 

Try also Chef Camille Becerra's De Maria, healthful offerings for breakfast, lunch and dinner in a beautiful contemporary setting in the outskirts of NoLiTa.

Three's Company

A restaurateur for over a decade, entrepreneur, and animal activist Pamela Elizabeth currently has a roster of 7 kosher/vegan restaurants in New York City all created to empower and educate customers about their food consumption choices. 

Blossom was Elizabeth's 1st vegan restaurant, a formal, sit down venture that opened in 2005. The fast food chain Blossom Du Jour débuted in Chelsea in 2010 and most recently the comfort food cantine Urban Vegan Kitchen opened its doors in 2016. 

Menu options and atmosphere vary from one spot to another, but all ingredients are fresh and organic, from local farms or small distribution companies and all dishes are completely animal free. 

Elizabeth has also launched a handmade, vegan chocolate line called Cocoa V and launched The Blossom Cookbook in April.

The V Word

ABC Carpet & Home now has a culinary trifecta, thank to the addition of chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's abcV

In collaboration with Paulette Cole, ABC's CEO and Creative Director, the restaurant is open from 7:30am, serving nutrient rich and high-vibrational foods intended to "embrac(e) balance with beauty, wellness, wisdom & love" throughout the day (or nights for dinner).

Their third project together, abcV is a nod to Vongerichten's upbringing in France, a time of frugal consumption and balanced diet composed predominantly of grains and vegetables.

Avant Garden Vegan Restaurant East Village

Raising the Bar on Fine Vegan Dining

Understated and under-the-radar, this intimate East Village restaurant serves innovative plant-based cuisine under the guidance of chef Tony Mongeluzzi. 

Avant Garden
's menu is succinct - broken down into "toasts", salads and hot mains - and diners are encouraged to share.

On a recent visit à trois, we simply ordered one of everything and then doubled the desserts, accompanied by fresh, full-bodied Viognier. 

By far one of our favorite splurges in the city.

Try also Avant Garden's sister restaurants: Mother of Pearl (post-modern Polynesian), Lady Bird (globally-inspired vegan tapas) and Cienfuegos (Cuban rum bar with small bites).
